Can you hear the buzz? No, you are not dreaming, today - May 20 - is World Bee Day! APIVITA, inspired by the bees, celebrates once again the day which was established by the United Nations to raise awareness on the importance of protecting bees and other pollinators to ensure stability in the global food supply and even eradicate hunger in developing countries, two fundamental elements of the 17 SDGs. World Bee Day theme 2021 is “Bee engaged: Build Back Better for Bees”. By this theme, United Nations focused on the threats of protection posed by COVID-19 to bees and other pollinators.

But why are bees such a crucial part of our ecosystem?

There is scientific evidence that bees have been on the planet for more than 100 million years. They fertilize more than 70% of plant species, which means they pollinate at least 40.000 plant species globally. Well, these little insects pollinate a third of the food we eat and 80 percent of flowering plants. Therefore, thanks to bees we get not only delicious honey but also fruit, vegetables, and even chocolate and coffee!

As a matter of fact, the world would be nothing like we know it today if bees cease to exist on the planet. According to the European Red List, 9% of bee species in Europe are endangered. Consequently, the 1/3 of most important food crops globally, are also in danger. Especially, fruits like apples, pears, oranges, melons, strawberries, almonds, broccoli, and asparagus, would showcase an immediate decline!

APIVITA is a natural beauty care brand, born of bees in Greek nature and raised by science. The honeybee society is our main source of inspiration because bees are the sentinels of the health and beauty of the environment and the lifeline of the sustainability of our societies. Even the name APIVITA is derived from the Latin words APIS (Bee) and VITA (Life) meaning “life of the bee”! The APIVITA logo is inspired by the “Bees of Malia”, a rare Minoan gold piece of jewelry representing fertility and harmony.

Since 1/1/2021, APIVITA has committed to giving back at least 1% of APIVITA e-shop sales to support environmental causes. Our partnership with 1% for the Planet is an exciting step in the brand's ongoing commitment to greater environmental responsibility.

In collaboration with “The Bee Camp”, a nonprofit member of 1% for the Planet, we have created more than 30.000 Seed Mix envelopes of bee-friendly plants to inform and raise awareness about the importance of bees for the ecosystem. At the same time, plenty of bee events are organized in Greece, Portugal, Spain, France, and Belgium. They share the same motto: Save the bees!

Happy World Bee Day!
