APIVITA Biochemical Laboratory

23/11/2018

APIVITA owns its own biochemical laboratory, which is responsible for in-house in vitro studies. More specifically, in the biochemistry lab we assess the safety and the efficacy of active ingredients or extracts on human cell lines. We use two cell lines: human epidermal keratinocytes and human dermal fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are used to assess the dermis function, while keratinocytes are used to assess the epidermis function under the effect of different ingredients or extracts.

For the efficacy assessments we target the DNA. For this reason, we have created a genes database, called ‘’APIGENES’’, which consists of 300 different genes that are involved in different molecular biochemical pathways and are important in cosmetic science, such as ageing, oxidative stress, hydration, inflammation, photoaging, skin whitening.

In addition, the results of the in vitro studies are the basis of APIVITA's research activity in various European research projects. The research activity of APIVITA is organized in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, green chemistry, nanotechnology and modern cosmetology.
