Visiting Gythio with Aegean Rebreath!

On the weekend of May 25th and 26th, 2024, a team of six APIVITA volunteers travelled with Aegean Rebreath to Gythio, enforcing underwater clean ups, thus contributing to alleviating our seas from a considerable volume of waste.

During these two days, the experienced divers of Aegean Rebreath, supported by APIVITA volunteers, regional partner pharmacies, the local community and the local authorities, managed to retrieve from the seabed a large number of tires and fabrics, as well as plastic and glass objects – and not just that!

Results:

The actions enforced at the Port of Gythio resulted in collecting and assorting numerous objects, which are reported below:

• 493 plastic items
• 414 metallic items
• 373 glass/ceramic items
• 35 pieces of clothing
• 59 tires

The above-mentioned waste retrieved from the seabed was concentrated in the dock and, following the necessary assorting and measuring actions, was promoted to collaborating partners to be appropriately managed.

It is also worth mentioning that this initiative of ours was highly supported by the Municipality of East Mani and the Municipal Port Fund of Eastern Mani, with their constant presence, while our collaborating local pharmacies supported our endeavor in practice, helping spread the message and the importance of this APIVITA Environmental Responsibility initiative. We acknowledge and highly appreciate their contribution!

What’s next?

Our common actions with Aegean Rebreath continue, encompassing two more destinations for 2024. On the weekend of September 7th and 8th we are sailing to the island of Kefalonia, approaching the region of Argostoli, while this year travelling will be concluded at Spetses, on October 5th and 6th.
