OUR FARMS
Apivita Organic Herb Farms
Our main goal is to organically cultivate Greek native medicinal herbs and develop excellent regional practices in collaboration with the scientific community in order to create additional herbal products, such as organic essential oils and extracts.
We have invested most of our time and energy in researching the sustainable agriculture of medicinal herbs and organic beehives to ensure that only the finest ingredients are used in the creation of APIVITA products, not only for our customer, but for Mother Nature as well.
As we are extremely active and aware of the cultivation process for every herb used in our products, we have in turn established a mutual relationship with local farmers and agriculturists, along with our sister company, APIVITA Farm, which is located in Domokos, Fthiotida in central Greece. The focus of APIVITA Farm is the quality, safety and full traceability from the “earth to the bottle” of all medicinal and aromatic plants used in APIVITA products while leading the way to an alternative sustainable cooperative agricultural practice in rural Greece.
APIVITA Farm has developed organic farms in four different regions in Greece: Mt. Olympus, Arkadia, Fthiotida and Thessaly focusing on the cultivation of local herbs such as Greek mountain tea, St. John’s wort, lavender, lemon balm, chamomile, clary sage, marigold, thyme, marjoram and rosemary. At the same time we have established collaborations with organic farmers and herb collectors that follow sustainable wild crafting practices around Greece. We share our passion and know how for herbs with them and together we deliver natural raw materials of high biological value.
Apivita Bee Farms
APIVITA (meaning the “life of the bee” in latin) was founded through the inspiration of the bee colony and since 1979, all APIVITA products include only the finest natural bee ingredients such as propolis, royal jelly, honey, beeswax and bee pollen.
APIVITA, in conjunction with select beekeepers who share the same philosophy, work together to grow each of these hand-picked ingredients which in turn produce only the most valuable bee products that are free of pesticides, antibiotics and chemical residues. APIVITA, in collaboration with universities, have developed specific standards so that they only deliver the highest quality bee products.
In 2004, APIVITA established its own bee farm which consisted of 50 beehives which has grown to more than 200 over the past few years.
In 2011 we established our sister company APIGAIA (meaning the “land of the bee” in latin) in collaboration with local beekeepers in the greater area of Lake Smokovo, Thessaly, Greece. APIGAIA is the single largest apiary of 2000 beehives in Greece with state of the art bee product harvesting facilities. APIGAIA’s operation is focused on the quality, safety and full traceability of the products while providing a new model of development through co-operations in rural Greece. APIGAIA will provide added value bee products of the highest standards that will be processed in the new APIVITA modern factory facilities at Markopoulo, Attiki.
Throughout the seasons, we move these beehives from the plains of Attika to the almond orchards in the winter; to the highlands of Arkadia amidst the native herbs, apple and cherry orchards in the late spring; then higher to the fir forest of Mt. Mainalon in Arkadia in the summer months; and finally back to the plains of Arkadia for the heather autumn blooming season.
We harvest less than 40% of the hives production and treat the hives only with essential oils and plant extracts in order to promote the sustainability of the hive.
Furthermore since 1979 we have been collaborating with more than 20 select beekeepers from different regions of Greece that today deliver added value bee products: 30.000 kilos of 5 different varieties of honey, 700 kilos of propolis, 600 kilos of fresh bee pollen and 60 kilos of royal jelly.
